I'm working on cleaning up a scan of this painting so I can put it on the imagekind site, available as a print. Unfortunately the red and blue areas reflected the light of the scanner, so there is a lot of fiddling around to do and it's taking many days to get it done.
Next time I do a flag painting I'm putting in more white. Lesson learned.
Over on my other blog Seven Deadly Sinners, by far the most linked and searched for post is the Breeder Bingo Card. When I was researching that one I used arguments people have used on me, or things people have said to friends. Some stuff is a matter of opinion, like the relative awesomeness of "new baby smell" or the pertinence of an ancient and often mis-translated book, and some things just make no sense to me whatsoever.
Like the concept of genetic immortality.
I confess whenever I hear that one a picture something like this pops into my head. The sun is going Red Giant (in about 5 billion years), and the last human alive is there to see it. All his generations of ancestors, millions upon trillions, are proudly proclaiming "WE WON!" (represented here by two cavemen, as I'm lazy and also will never pass up an opportunity to draw cavemen and dinosaurs together. Sorry, Mr. Ryan!)
The dinosaur ancestor of that last chicken is the real "winner", though, don't you think?
I just got an email from a guy who works at a famous toy store in Seattle where I used to work; they've started a Flickr account for pix of the place, past and present. Here's a shot of the bathroom I painted one summer; imagine a luridly purple wall and bright acrylic colors and you're halfway there. The overwhelming smell of hot fresh tar (the store was located next to a ship repair place) I leave to your imagination.
It's always worth a trip to the ACAD spring show & sale (even if it's snowing like crazy outside and "spring" seems like something you once dreamed about...a long time ago). Student art tends to be a game of "guess the influence", which for the past few years has boiled down to Juxtapoz magazine. Some of the artists are very good at it, and it will be interesting to see what they do when they find their own voices. I saw the work of several students whose output I'd love to track, but only one of them had a card, so for your art fix of the day check out the creations of Aimee Y. Qiu.
Note to Kamala: no foam Bob Ross heads this time. That guy must have graduated!
I know, he looks like Blofeld, but he sounds like Goldfinger. For more stirring images of America, check out Bob Rini's CRAZY FOR THE BLUE, WHITE AND RED on Youtube.
Dogflowers and how to grow them.
