Plastic cowboys

The Spirit of Calgary

STAMP_1

From this morning's Stampede parade.

What you can see: cowboy, horse, cell phone, construction, going the wrong way in the parade.

What you can't hear: hundreds of people skipping work to yell "YEEEEEEEE HAW!!!!!!!!" to the prompting of clowns and girls in sequins.

(Filbrandt, I took this picture for you!)

The Courtship of Eddie's Saucers

Eddie It being one of several World UFO Days and all (this one, July 2, commemorating the Roswell Incident), it seems appropriate to post this image done for the Video Vulture column a few weeks back. Mr. Vulture was writing about skewed memory and the rewriting of cinematic history. Even Ed Wood Jr. began stating in interviews that he used hubcaps and pie plates as the flying saucers in his epic, Plan 9 From Outer Space. The truth was finally revealed in the excellent 1992 documentary Flying Saucers Over Hollywood, which has since been included as an extra on the Wade Williams DVD release.

Happy Canada Day!

TPtown-warmth (Kling-klang image to engorge.) You can tell that the temperature has gone higher than 18 degrees Celsius here in Vancouver when everyone starts to celebrate/run amok with fish-white feet on display, make constant exclamations about the crazy pleasant temperature, and express concern for all of the plant life that hasn't been rained on for a few days. It's a warm-wave!

more on Portland Glass Artist Andy Paiko

Attach Kamala writes from her deathbed:

I recently learned about the amazing glass art of Andy Paiko, a fellow Portland artist. He and I are both participating in the 2009 Portland Open Studios Tour this October. He's also having a show soon at the Portland Museum of Contemporary Crafts.

Most 'glass art' makes me soil my pants in boredom, but this stuff is awe inspiring. See for yourself. Don't miss the sewing machine.

OPB also did a pretty cool "Oregon Art Beat" about him here.

Terrible Yellow Eyes

Dalton A little something by Dalton Webb for the Terrible Yellow Eyes blog.

Vanda

72.vanda I spend a lot of time in the orchid house at work (it's a nice break from designing stuff and nagging people). Sure, the flowers are amazing, but I've come to really appreciate the wacky root systems of orchids. Here's something I started painting in the mist and finished in my warm dry studio (with hail falling outside).
