Victoria McKenzie paints tiny scenes on discarded MetroCard passes, which is a pretty genius recycling idea. However, the MTA is crying copyright infringement and wants a cut of her profits.
I can see both sides of this, but judging from the comments on this news story, the MTA is looking very bad for going after this artist with all the real problems they face. Sure, it's their logo, but it's also garbage; once something is thrown away or useless, does the originating company still have rights to its use? If the MTA was smart, they would have promoted this artist on their website instead of making her a hero of the common people. Now they're awash in bad publicity, and they don't seem to need it.
Meanwhile I'm eying my collection of old transit passes from Boston, circa late 80's and thinking...
ETA: an amazing selection of art on metro cards: Single Fare
