Walker Rock Garden

Walker_rock I can't believe I lived in Seattle for 6 years and never knew about this place until I moved away. It's amazing! I can't wait to go check it out next time I'm back up there. This is the kind of stuff I really want to make in our back yard... total fantasy land.

My latest commission

Underground Culture from all parts of the World

Unknown_1

Published by Shoeisha, 2008, Edited by Mohri, supposedly available in Kinokuniya Bookstores here in the States.

"Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley ... draws a fairy tale painting by using the watercolor and the acrylic. In her artwork, marine biology, Art Nouveau, childhood experiences, religious art, Japanese Prints, nostalgia, and kitsch, etc. are combined. Because only strange materials are combined, the plant and the flower might look like genitals that come out in the Japanese old obscene picture. Her artwork is Gothic-Lolita that eeriness is coexistent to beauty."

(!)

Also in it are some artists whose work I've admired for a long time - Joe Sorren, Dave Cooper, Ray Caesar, Camille Rose Garcia, Jonathon Weiner, Heiko Muller...

Slideshow of many more images of and from the book here if you're curious.

Tiamo & Mini Me

Christas_dogs_wtrmrk_1

My latest painting, a commission done for a friend who owns these two sexy dog ladies.  Mini Me and Tiamo are lovely, aging canine gals who enjoy lounging on a purple velvet couch while smoking from a hookah. Flickr slideshow, with details here.

A Cabinet of Natural Curiosities

Heikohomesick2
Roq La Rue Presents “A Cabinet of Natural Curiosities" group show
opens Friday February 8th 6-9pm
runs through March 1st

For our first show of 2008, Roq la Rue is pleased to present a huge group show entitled “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities". We asked our artists to create works relating to animals. The mysterious links we have with animals are integral part of our psychological make up. As humans we treasure them, fetishize them, turn them into symbols, anthropomorphize them, and at the same time inflict terrible cruelty upon them. We allow horrific injustices in slaughterhouses to occur and decimate their habitats, yet offer our children stuffed animals for comfort and have whole stores devoted to pampering your pet. The incongruities in the way we relate to the other creatures living on the planet relates directly to the way we view ourselves.
This show, while leaning more towards the fanciful rather than the political, offers up a wunderkammer like display of creatures, while addressing many of the issues raised above.

Artists include: Femke Hiemstra, Travis Louie, Brian Despain, Amy Sol, Lisa Petrucci, Chris Ryniak, Chet Zar, Kozydan, Junko Mizumo, Liz McGrath, Kukula, Laura Plansker, Mark Frauenfelder, Christian Vanminnen, Mark Gleason, Nathan Ota, Catalina Estrada, Sarah Joncas, Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley, John Brophy, Anthony Pontius, Jeremy Bennet, Jim Woodring, Heiko Muller, Javier S. Ortega, Slate Grove, Davey, Jen Lobo, and more..

As The Flames Get Brighter The Snowman Screams

Santa_fart

I was emailed this beautiful ad by an old friend yesterday. Not only is it a classy and gorgeous toy (that I totally want, by the way), but I think that "AS THE 'FLAMES' GET BRIGHTER THE SNOWMAN SCREAMS" is some of the absolutely most genius advertising text I've ever read.

Santa farting over the fire is SO TERRIFYING!!! AAAGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

An Elaborate and Unavoidable Propinquity

Propinquitywatermark

One of my latest paintings, made for a show at Gallery 1988 in San Francisco.
I'm not totally in love with it as I feel it's a wee bit too much on the 'tattoo art' side of things but hey.
I wanted to paint a catfish belly and I only had a few days. I'm real happy with the waves.
