For some reason I'm on several "calls for erotic art" mailing lists. I'm not particularly into erotic art (pinup girls, high heels, and bondage gear are fine, I suppose, but aren't really my thing) and I'm not sure why my work about cute li'l animals and spam would lead anyone to think I would be into making art about pinup girls, high heels and bondage gear. It's always nice to be asked, though.
"Erotic" in most contexts seems to mean "what white middle class straight guys without a lot of imagination like". That's a pretty limited definition, but it sells a ton of movies, magazines and art. I prefer Mapplethorpe, Cunningham, and, well, Tom of Finland (find yer own link).
Life is a classroom with a lot of homework. I like to take an assignment and twist it while staying within the stated rules (see: Mmodern Gallery/Blonde Bombshell show. That went over like a lead balloon). The object isn't to sell the work or even have people like it, although it's nice when it happens. The point is to make myself laugh, and if a few other folks get it my work is done.
So, here's a reference shot for a watercolor series of erotic plants. A rampant fishtail palm, slightly damp; thrusting out into the misty moisty warm surround of the tropical plant room, overflowing with a frothy fountain of flowers. Oh, yeah.
Kinda looks like an ant to me...maybe I'm just weird.
